The municipality of Moerdijk has approved the start of the design process for a multifunctional facility (MF) in Willemstad, a historic fortified town in North Brabant, Netherlands. This building will not only accommodate various community services but also serve as a gathering place for local residents. The tender process has been successfully completed, and the design team, led by LIAG architects and building consultants, is eager to begin this project. Their goal is to create a welcoming space where all inhabitants of Willemstad can feel at home.

The building will house an integral child center featuring two primary schools and day care , sports facilities for both schools and clubs, and a community house. These five organizations are actively involved in the design process and will collaborate closely once the facility is operational. “The concept (and the visual representation shown above) of this multifunctional center reflects the essence of Willemstad as a small community,” explains architect Carina Nørregaard from LIAG. “It’s a place where people come together to participate in shared activities. In our design, each organization will have its own ‘house’, with these ‘houses’ arranged along a central street.”

A sense of social connection
This concept offers numerous advantages. “We can showcase the unique identity of each organization through the design of their ‘house’. At the same time, we will ensure that everything is beautifully coordinated,” Carina elaborates. “Future users will perceive this multifunctional center as an inviting and intimate space. The intuitive layout will make navigation easy, and the open sightlines will allow them to see each other and engage with ongoing activities. This fosters a sense of social connection.”

Climate-resilient and nature-inclusive
The outdoor area will also play a significant role in the project. “The site will be designed to be climate-resilient and nature-inclusive. We are also exploring how to make the best use of the available space,” says landscape architect Coos van Ginkel from Buro Sant en Co. "We envision a green playground where children can embark on adventures or build huts, teachers can hold outdoor lessons, and residents can exercise and relax."

The place to be
“We want this multifunctional center to be vibrant and lively throughout the day. This can only be achieved by involving entrepreneurs and residents early in the design process. All ideas are welcome. Understanding the needs of the Willemstad community is essential, and building support is crucial to make this facility ‘the place to be’,” Carina emphasizes. “Additionally, we are looking for creative ways for local residents to contribute, such as planting the first tree on the site. This approach will help strengthen the bond between the building and the community,” Carina concludes.
